HISTORY

The Placencia Peninsula has already been inhabited by the Mayas hundreds of years ago. In the 17th century it became home to English Puritans who came down from North America looking for a new place to settle. They left in the Central American wars around 1820. Placencia was later on resettled and became a prosperous village mainly dealing with seafood products. Today tourism is one of the most important sources of income for this culturally diverse community where Creoles, Spanish, American and European Nationals peacefully live together.
